🌊 Tides & Sea Safety Basics

Understanding the water before you step into it

The sea is constantly moving, changing and shifting and that’s part of its beauty.

But it also means that no two swims are ever quite the same.

Whether you’re swimming off a sandy beach, rocky coastline or harbour edge, understanding tides and basic sea safety can make all the difference to your confidence and your safety.

🌊 What are tides?

Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun.

Most coastal areas experience:

Two high tides

Two low tides

each day

The difference between them can vary greatly depending on where you are in the world.

⏱️ Why tides matter to swimmers

Tides affect much more than just how far the water comes up the beach.

They influence:

Water depth

Currents and flow speed

Entry and exit points

Wave size and behaviour

A swim spot that feels calm and shallow at low tide can feel completely different just a few hours later.

🌊 Incoming vs outgoing tide

Understanding the direction of the tide is key:

Incoming (flood) tide:

Water is moving towards the shore

Often feels more supportive for returning to land

Can cover hazards like rocks quickly

Outgoing (ebb) tide:

Water is moving away from the shore

Can create stronger pull and currents

May make it harder to swim back in

⚠️ Currents & rip tides

One of the most important things to be aware of is water movement.

Rip currents can:

Pull you away from the shore

Move faster than you can swim against

If you find yourself caught in one:

Stay calm

Don’t fight it directly

Swim parallel to the shore until you’re free

Then make your way back in

📍 Know your entry and exit

Before you get in, always ask yourself:

Where am I getting in?

Where am I getting out?

Will that still be accessible when I finish?

Tides can quickly turn an easy exit into a scramble over rocks or a long walk back.

🌦️ Check conditions before you go

A quick check before your swim can make a big difference:

Tide times for your location

Wind direction and strength

Wave conditions

Local hazards or warnings

Conditions can change quickly — even within the same day.

🧭 Simple safety rules

Wherever you are in the world, these basics apply:

Never swim alone

Use a towfloat for visibility

Stay within your limits

Keep an eye on each other

If in doubt… don’t go out

💙 Respect the water

The sea isn’t something to fear — but it is something to respect.

The more you understand it, the more confident and relaxed you’ll feel in it.

And that’s when swimming becomes something truly special.

🌍 Wherever you swim…

Take a moment before every swim to observe.

Watch the water.

Feel the conditions.

Trust your instincts.

Because the sea will always tell you what you need to know…

if you take the time to listen.

💙
