How to Read the Sea
A simple guide for open water swimmers
Spending time in the sea is one of the most rewarding things we can do — but the sea is always changing. Learning to “read the sea” helps you feel more confident, safer and more relaxed every time you swim.
Here are a few simple things to look out for before you get in:

🌊 1. Look at the Waves
Are they:
- Small and gentle?
- Rolling in steadily?
- Choppy and unpredictable?
Choppy water can feel much harder, especially for newer swimmers.
🌬️ 2. Check the Wind
Wind has a huge effect on how the sea feels.
- Light wind = calmer conditions
- Strong wind = choppy water
- Offshore wind (blowing out to sea) = can carry you away
- Onshore wind (blowing in) = pushes you back to shore
Before getting in, stand and watch the sea for a few minutes.
Look for:
- Currents moving left or right
- Waves breaking differently in certain areas
- Water pulling back strongly (rip currents)

Cold water affects everyone differently.
Take your time:
- Enter slowly
- Control your breathing
- Give your body time to adjust
