☀️ Heatwaves & Sea Swimming – 7 Tips for Staying Safe This Summer

After weeks of sunshine, soaring temperatures and sea temperatures reaching a very pleasant 21°C, many of us are spending more time than ever in the water.

While summer swimming can be wonderful, warm weather brings its own challenges. Here are seven simple tips to help you stay safe and enjoy every swim.

1. Hydrate Before You Swim

Many swimmers don't realise how much fluid they lose on hot days. By the time you feel thirsty, you're already becoming dehydrated.

Drink regularly throughout the day and consider bringing water to the beach for after your swim too.

2. Don't Assume Warm Water Means No Risks

The sea may feel inviting, but open water always deserves respect. Currents, tides, changing weather and unexpected fatigue can still catch swimmers out.

Always swim within your abilities and check conditions before entering the water.

3. Protect Yourself from the Sun

A long swim followed by chatting on the beach can mean hours of sun exposure.

Use sunscreen, wear a hat when you're not in the water, and remember that the sun reflects off the sea, increasing exposure.

4. Listen to Your Body

Heat can leave you feeling more tired than usual. If you're feeling dizzy, light-headed or unusually fatigued, it's time to rest, cool down and rehydrate.

There's no prize for staying in the water longer than you should.

5. Enter the Water Gradually

Even on the hottest days, the sea is usually much cooler than the air.

Take time to acclimatise, splash water on your face and body, and allow yourself to adjust before swimming away from shore.

6. Swim With Others

One of the best things about community swimming is knowing you're not alone.

Whether you're a confident swimmer or just enjoying a dip, having others nearby makes swimming safer and often far more enjoyable.

7. Stay for the Friendship

Sea swimming isn't just about the time spent in the water.

Some of the best moments happen afterwards—sharing stories, enjoying a drink, watching the sea and spending time with like-minded people.

Those connections are just as important as the swim itself.

Enjoy the Summer Safely

We're incredibly lucky to have beautiful beaches on our doorstep and a wonderful swimming community to share them with.

Enjoy the sunshine, stay safe, look after each other and most importantly—have fun!

See you in the water!
